What are alabaster lamps?

Alabaster lamps are light fittings with a shade made of natural stone. Alabaster is a fine-grained variety of gypsum that is translucent: when the lamp is on, the whole shade glows with a warm, soft light and the veins of the stone appear. No two shades are the same, because each one is cut from a different part of the block.

We work with Spanish alabaster. The blocks are machine cut, and every shade is shaped and finished by hand. The fittings have a copper body, finished as standard in brushed gold or matt black.

Types of alabaster lamps

One stone, six ways to light a room. Choose a type to see how to pick the right one, and the models.

Natural alabaster, alabaster glass or resin?

Shops sell three different materials under the name “alabaster”. Only natural alabaster is stone. Alabaster glass is milky glass of a similar colour, and imitations are made of resin or acrylic. The difference is easiest to see when the lamp is switched on.

How to recognise real alabaster

Switch the lamp on: you will see irregular veins and lighter and darker areas in the stone.
Compare two pieces: natural shades always differ.
Read the description: look for “natural alabaster”, not “alabaster effect” or “alabaster glass”.
Touch it: stone is cool and clearly heavier than plastic.

Where our alabaster comes from

We work with natural alabaster from Spain. The stone is machine cut from blocks, then shaped, sanded and fitted to the frame by hand. The veining depends on where in the block a piece comes from, so the lamp you receive may differ slightly from the photo. You can choose from four varieties of stone.

Materials and craftsmanship

How to choose an alabaster lamp for your interior

Start with the purpose of the room and the ceiling height. A chandelier or a large pendant gives the main light, wall sconces and table lamps create atmosphere, and a ceiling light works where the ceiling is low.

Living room

A chandelier as the main light, plus wall sconces or a floor lamp by an armchair. Several sources at different heights show the stone at its best.

Dining room and kitchen

A pendant or a linear chandelier above the table, two or three pendants above an island. The bottom of the shade usually 75-90 cm above the top.

Bedroom

With a lower ceiling, a ceiling light instead of a chandelier. Either side of the bed: wall sconces, table lamps or small pendants.

Hall and hallway

Wall sconces along the wall or a ceiling light. In a tall hall, a chandelier or a cascade of globes hung at different heights.

Rules of thumb in numbers

Alabaster, travertine or marble?

All three are natural stones, but each treats light differently.

Alabaster: Lets light through the whole shade. A warm, soft glow with veins visible when lit. The most atmospheric of the three.
Travertine: A porous stone in earthy tones that lets little light through. The lamp shines down and around the stone, which shows its texture. Travertine lamps
Marble: Dense and hard, lets less light through than alabaster. A thin shade glows and shows contrasting veins, a thicker one shines at the edges. Marble lamps

Which bulb for an alabaster lamp

Warm LED light sources of 2700-3000 K work best. They barely heat up, and the warm colour brings out the honey tone of the stone. Our lamps use E27, E14 and G9 sockets as well as integrated LED modules. The light source and colour temperature are listed on every product page.

How to care for alabaster

Dust it dry with a soft cloth or a brush.
Do not use water, vinegar or detergents: alabaster is soft and absorbent.
Switch the lamp off and let it cool before cleaning.
Protect the stone from knocks: it has a Mohs hardness of about 2.

Frequently asked questions about alabaster lamps

Does alabaster let light through?

Yes. Alabaster is translucent: light passes through the whole shade, and when the lamp is on you can see the veins and the varying thickness of the stone. The thinner the wall and the lighter the variety, the brighter the glow.

What is the difference between alabaster and marble?

Alabaster is a soft variety of gypsum that lets light through well. Marble is a hard carbonate rock: it lets less light through, though a thin shade still glows and shows contrasting veins, and it resists scratches better. For shades that should glow across their whole surface, alabaster is the choice.

Is alabaster glass the same as alabaster?

No. Alabaster glass is milky glass in a colour close to the stone. It glows evenly, without veins. The lamps in our Alabaster collection have shades made of natural stone.

How much does an alabaster lamp cost?

Wall sconces start at 120,00 €, pendant lights at 144,00 € and chandeliers at 268,80 €. Half of our pendant lights start below 390 €, and half of our chandeliers below 1.440 €. Large compositions and made-to-measure lamps are quoted individually. Prices as of October 2026.

How do I clean an alabaster lamp?

Switch the lamp off, let it cool and wipe the stone with a dry, soft cloth or a brush. Do not use water, vinegar, alcohol or detergents: alabaster is absorbent and may stain.

Does alabaster turn yellow?

Over the years the stone may warm slightly in tone, especially with smoke from a fireplace or cigarettes and with hot bulbs. LED light sources barely heat up, and regular dry dusting keeps the stone light.

Can an alabaster lamp be used in a bathroom?

Our alabaster lamps are designed for indoor use, and alabaster does not like moisture. Do not install them in the shower or bath zone. If you are planning a lamp for a well-ventilated bathroom, write to us before you buy and we will suggest a model.

Which bulb suits an alabaster lamp?

Warm LED, 2700-3000 K. The socket type (E27, E14 or G9) is listed on every product page. Some models have an integrated LED module with no bulb to replace.

Will the lamp look exactly like the photo?

The shape, size and fittings, yes. The veining and the tone of the stone will always differ slightly, because every shade comes from a different part of the block. It is a feature of natural alabaster, not a defect.

How long does delivery take?

In-stock lamps are dispatched within 48 hours. Made-to-order models take 4-5 weeks. We ship to Poland and other European Union countries; the available countries and the delivery cost are shown in the cart.

Can I order a lamp in a different size or finish?

Yes. We can change the size, the stone variety and the finish of the metal parts. As standard the fittings are brushed gold or matt black, other finishes are available to order. The lead time is agreed with the quote. Lamps made to your specification cannot be returned without a reason.

What warranty do alabaster lamps have?

3 years on every lamp, LED light sources included. The warranty does not limit your statutory rights. You have 14 days to request a return.
